The FIRST Core Values are: Discovery, Innovation, Impact, Inclusion, Teamwork and Fun. Over the last 8 years, GEARS has not only taught team members these values, but we have adopted them as our own guiding principles.
These Core Values encourage students to be open to new ideas, learn to work together and to be persistent when trying to solve problems. We see this persistence in their iterations. It’s demonstrated in their designing, building, and programming of robots; in their solution development for the Innovative Projects; and their self-scrutinizing work
while preparing presentations for judges.
GEARS has also gone through two iterations and we are excited to announce that our third one will be developing throughout the 2023-24 season. GEARS was founded in June of 2015 with 10 members of FLL Team 1920, Baker’s Dozen, and a desire to introduce students throughout the Michiana community to FIRST. We were able to create a few additional teams that year, including FLL Team 18067, Holy LEGOs Batman, who is still active today. We also created our first two FTC teams and a workshop for the high school students.
After 4 years, we outgrew the 3,000 sqft hay barn and developed a relationship with a local innovation center that offered us additional space and equipment to host even more teams.
Through these first two iterations, we learned how to serve teams and team members with materials, tools, spaces and leadership. We are very excited to see how this knowledge is applied to our
new 7,000 sqft facility in Osceola. We searched for the last 6 months for the right location to serve the majority of our current families. With members from Granger, Mishawaka, Elkhart and more, Osceola seemed to be the most centralized. The building was built in the 1950’s as a lumberyard. The space is wide open and well-built. It allows us the opportunity to create the individual learning studios that are similar to our first two locations With updates and iterations to host teams even better.
